Samsung A5
Rs. 14,490 Rs. 21,300

Firstly, let me tell you why Samsung came up with a new 2016 version of the Samsung A5 smartphone. Simply because the earlier version had many flaws reported by customers. So, in order to strengthen their line of A series smartphones, Samsung released a new A5 2016 model.

The Samsung A5 2016 model falls between the Samsung Galaxy A8 and Samsung Galaxy ON5 in terms of most vital specifications like memory. The designers actually did a fantastic job of upgrading this mid-range Android Smartphone.

So, moving on, let me give you an overview of the new design of Samsung A5.

Design of Samsung A5

On first looks, the Samsung A5 2016 version looks more like Galaxy S6. The A5 is looks slim at 7.9mm, but feels sufficiently weighty when held in hand at 155g. Its 13 Megapixel main camera juts out a little at the rear, but not enough to make the A5 2016 rock on a desk. One nice design change is the full-HD SuperAMOLED panel, which measures 5.2 inches diagonally. Screen is large enough to watch videos and movies in 1080p resolution. The screen is amply bright, while viewing angles are strong and detail is sharp. Samsung A5 has a pixel density of 424ppi, which is higher than even the latest iPhone 6s !!

Performance of Samsung A5

Performance – wise Samsung Galaxy A5 has greatly improved due to its new processor, 1.6GHz Exynos 7580, an octa-core chip based on the Cortex-A53. It has been paired with 2GB of RAM to make multitasking smoother. MicroSD support has also been expanded from 64 GB to 128GB. Although internal storage is just 16GB. On the whole, the Samsung A5 2016 model feels more responsive, and overall performance has drastically improved. Gaming and multitasking performance was found to be excellent.

Camera

The Samsung A5 features a 13 Megapixel, f/1.9 Main camera with LED flash. The selfie camera is 5 Mega-pixels (also f/1.9). Both cameras are capable of 1080p video at 30fps and added optical image stabilization. By default the main camera shoots in 16:9 at 9.6 MP. However, if you want the full 13 MP it is available in 4:3 mode, which means you’ll lose the top and bottom sections of photos.

The camera isn’t as good as the 16 MP model found in the Samsung Galaxy S6, but it does capture a fair amount of detail with accurate exposure. The lens is sharp right to the corners. The camera app is unchanged, with various shooting modes including Pro, Panorama, Continuous Shot, HDR and Night. There is an option to download more. There are also real-time effects and in selfie mode, a Wide Selfie option.

Operating System and Software

The Samsung A5 2016 version comes with pre-installed Android 5.1.1 Lollipop Operating System. Little bit outdated considering Marshmellow is the new latest. But still Ok as far as performance is concerned. Plus OTA (Over The Air) updates by Samsung should cover up for the lack of new OS, I believe.

Pre-installed on the phone, you will find Samsung’s own apps for browsing the web, playing back music and video, email, calendar and so on. You can access the Galaxy App Store as well as Google’s Play Store. Google apps are also preinstalled, as are Microsoft apps – Excel, Word, PowerPoint, OneNote, OneDrive and Skype – and you get 100GB of free OneDrive storage. All this actually eats into the paltry 16 Gigabyte of storage, and you’ll see just 9 GB available memory before you even start installing your first app. I really hate bloatware!

Here is a video review for you:

Key Features of Samsung A5

  • 5.2 inch Super AMOLED vibrant and bright Full HD display
  • New fingerprint scanner on Home button – nice security feature, although I found it a pain to recognize my finger.
  • Quad Core CPU, 2 GB RAM, 16 GB internal memory and 128 GB expandable memory
  • 2900 mAh battery which gives good hours of talk-time and also Quick-charging support makes it more easier to avoid those bulky power-banks.

Useful Tips for Samsung A5

  • Press home button twice to launch camera application
  • Palm – swipe to capture screen-shot. Very handy feature when sending out instant tweets or messages on whatsapp
  • Use power saving mode by swiping down the notification window. On top menu, just tap on Power Saving

PROS:
  • Comes with dual SIM and 4G support so you can pair the Samsung A5 with a Reliance JIO connection if you want. 🙂
  • Neat, classy design. Looks of this phone are really good. Most reviewers have commented on its good looks.
  • SuperAMOLED screen panel is a new killer addition. Screen is sharp and top quality. However, when you go outdoors, you might have to adjust the screen brightness to match up.

CONS:
  • No notification LED light, so you need to keep checking the phone for missed calls and missed messages. Very annoying at times!
  • Out-dated operating system. Samsung A5 comes with Android 5.1.1 Lollopop whereas the latest is Marshmellow
  • Finger-print scanner has bugs. It sometimes works but at times it simply refuses to respond.
